Things to Look at When Doing a Health Insurance Comparison

Sunday, January 10, 2010

If you are currently looking for individual health insurance or a family health insurance plan there are several things you need to consider. There are typically four different types of plans to choose from. Be sure that when you are doing your health insurance comparison that you are comparing the same plans against each other.

If you are looking at traditional full coverage health insurance plans, you will find that these are the most expensive of all the different types of coverage. They give you the ability to make your own medical care choices and have little restrictions on where or who you get your medical care from. If you can afford this type of plan, then compare the prices and the specific coverage for these types of plans. Look at some of the top insurance companies like Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna and American Family. You will need to read all the details of each plans top of the line coverage to make sure you are comparing the cost of identical plans. Choose the one that offers the best price for the coverage or the one you feel most comfortable with.

If you are like most people and you need to keep your expenses down, you should compare the plans at these same companies for coverage through a managed care plan. You can look at other carriers for these plans also. Do a web search for managed care providers in your local area. You will see some of the same names, but you may have a few extra choices. Line up all the companies and do a health insurance comparison for their HMO plans, their PPO plans and their POS plans. These are three different types of coverage so don't compare one type to another. Look at the coverage options with the different company's HMO plans. Compare premiums after you compare benefits. Then move on to compare PPO plans in the same way. Then compare POS plans in the same manner. When you have finished this exercise, you will have a fairly clear idea of what the best plan is for you and your family based on both coverage and premium. Don't forget to compare things like pre-existing condition coverage rules.
